The Wellness Way Approach

The Wellness Way Approach

What is The Wellness Way Approach?

Our society is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of people who suffer from complex, chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, hormone problems, autism, etc.

The system of medicine practiced by most physicians is oriented toward acute care, the diagnosis and treatment of trauma or illness that is of short duration and in need of urgent care, such as a broken bone or appendicitis. Physicians apply specific, prescribed treatments such as drugs or surgery that aim to treat the immediate problem or symptom.

Unfortunately, the acute-care approach lacks the proper methodology and tools for preventing and treating complex, chronic disease. In most cases, it does not take into account the unique genetic makeup of each individual or factors such as environmental exposures to toxins and the aspects of today’s lifestyle that have a direct influence on the rise in chronic disease in modern Western society.

The Wellness Way approach addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an expansion in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century.

By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more individual-centered approach, our approach addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Our practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, we are supporting the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

What Wellness Really Costs – A Personal Story

Understanding the Wellness Way Principle

Let’s put the above philosophy of The Wellness Way approach in simpler terms.

A common misconception most people have is that they think of their body as separate pieces functioning independently of each other. An example of this is eczema. Conventional medicine typically gives a patient who has eczema a steroid crème to treat the skin. However, eczema is actually a “gut” issue, and also a “brain or neurological” issue. Everything is connected!

The human body is like a Swiss watch. It is very complex and composed of many, many parts. What would happen if the smallest gear stops turning for just one moment? Would you agree that it would affect the whole watch? Would it keep time properly? No, of course not.

Has anyone ever taken medication for heart issues and later found out that the medication damaged their liver? The human body is like a Swiss watch — with many gears all working together in harmony! You cannot treat one system (gear) without affecting them all!

For example, detoxification is an essential gear, but it is only one of the gears. There are other gears such as the gear of proper nutrition, the gear of chiropractic care, the gear of proper mental health (such as the proper handling of stress), and the gear of proper hormone function. If you only have one gear working, you cannot be healthy!

So, if a person gets regular chiropractic care, but eats fast food all the time and handles his/her stress poorly, this person will not be able to achieve true and complete health! Likewise, if a person takes care of proper nutrition and proper detoxification but neglects the gear of proper care of the nervous system, he or she will never achieve true health! We must have all the gears working together in harmony — this is a true example of health.

To sum it all up, The Wellness Way looks at each individual as being unique. We look at the whole “watch” not just a part of it. We address the cause (or causes) of ill health, not just the symptoms.
